For example at my university the best professors only teach like 2 classes. Then some part timers teach like 6 classes. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

There are two reasons for it.

1. Professors at top schools don't get paid for their teaching -- they get paid for their research. A light teaching load gives them more time for research.

2. The top professors are in demand. Giving them a lighter teaching load makes them more likely to stay.

Generally as you progress in your career you earn the right to work less for more money. You will find that arrangement pleasing later in your life.

The better professors probably play a significant role in mentoring the newer and less experienced ones.

Many "full-time" tenured professors get release time (time away from teaching) to work on research or special projects. Bummer.
