Super Mario RPG is indeed a real game on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It was a combined effort of then Squaresoft and Nintendo.
It's worth trying out as it's not really your typical RPG.

More info: it was developed by Square, it features isometric 3d-ish graphics, it's got humor like its spiritual sequels (the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games), and Link and Samus make cameos.

but of course it is. I would say one the most fun old school RPG games that ever came out!!!
