I went to bed- nothing unusual about that. I just could not get comfortable. I then started to have really sharp pains across my stomach in line with my bellybutton. Sitting up helped slightly, but it took them nearly half an hour to go away. I had the same pains 'down below' at my cervix. Also had 3-5 second long period type cramps at the bottom of my back for a short time too. The pressure was immense. Does anyone know what it was?

Those were probably false labor pains. As long as the contractions aren't coming regularly you should be okay, but then again I'm not a doctor. I would definitely let your doctor know what's going on just in case.

Sounds like stretching tendons which caused a braxon hicks contraction. The sharp pain is stretching, sitting up helps take the pressure off the tendon, since laying down causes it to pull away from the body.

The pressure is a contraction.

The cramps in your back, if theyre localized and stayed there and didnt crawl across to your belly, or happen at the same time as your belly, are just muscle cramps. Although with braxon hicks and full on contractions you quite often have lower back pain. as well.

Its normal.

You shouldnt have more than 6 of those intense pressure feelings in an hour. If they start up and you have a couple close together, go lay down with a glass of water until they go away. If they dont, and you have more than 6, head for the hospital.

It sounds like Braxton Hicks, or pre-labour pains. They should usually go away on their own but if they don't, see your midwife or doctor. The below website has more information on Braxton Hicks so you know what to expect:

Good luck with the birth and the new baby!

Could be false labor. Your body is getting ready to have the baby. When the real thing happens the pains will last around 1 minute. If they don't stop or continue to get worse call your ob and get yourself checked. When I would get cramps drinking water always seemed to help.

Sounds like Braxton-Hicks, kind of 'practice' contractions. It's your body getting ready for the birth.

Those were most likely braxton hicks contractions, but I really advise you to call your doctor and check to see how far your dilated. Good Luck with your labor!
