Why were there so many Gay Nazis?

The National Socialist German Workers Party [the official name of the "Nazi Party"] was, among other things, homicidally homophobic. The Nazis ruthlessly enforced Paragraph 175 of the German Penal Code [Germany's anti-sodomy law] sent thousands of gay men to their deaths at Auchwitz and other concentration camps.

Despite that, there were many gay men in the Nazi Party, including top leaders like Ernst Rohm (head of the SA, the Nazi Party's militia and a founder of the Nazi Party). And there were many more bisexual men like Hermann Goering (the head of the Luftwaffe - the German Air Force and the number two man in Nazi Germany during most of World War II)

Why were there so many gay men in a ruthlessly anti gay organization? How did the Nazis reconcile their homophobia with the reality that so many of their leaders were gay? And today, are there many gays in the neo-nazi movement?

Hey, Aryanpride: Historical note, Heinrich Himmler was actually STRAIGHT! But it is well documented that Ernst Rohm was gay - hell, when Hitler ordered the Night of the Long Knives (the execution of the top leaders of the Nazi Party militia, the SA) the JUSTIFICATION was the well documented FACT that almost all the top SA leaders, from Rohm on down, were openly gay.

On the night that Hitler had Rohm arrested and shot, they caught Rohm in bed with his boyfriend, naked. And they were not suprised, since just about everybody in Germany at the time KNEW that all the top SA leaders were gay.

In 1920, Germany was the second country in the world to legalize homosexuality (the Soviet Union was the first in 1918) so there were a lot of openly gay men in Germany, including in the Nazi Party.

Because most organisations don't practice what they preach?

Much homophobia is caused by repressed homosexual feelings anyway, so in those cases, in the process of trying to 'squash' their sexual feelings, they end up being outwardly homosexual.

The nazis wanted to increase the population, and gay men were a threat to that. Lesbians however were not, so long as they agreed to be impregnated by SS soldiers. Once you're the one with power, you can do one thing and say another, but it doesn't make it right.

Gay Nazis have an agenda?! I did not know that. Very few Nazis have the courage to admit they are gay. In Nazi Germany, of course, gays were persecuted and murdered, just as were Jews, people with disabilities, and other disfavored groups. And, of course, the Nazis were not in favor of civil rights for gays, including same-sex marriage. How about you?

The same way Christians and other religions find out about their "leaders" today, through history. Do you seriously think they were open about their sexuality in that time frame and around people who could expose them? Get real! People today are found out and reported on, think Ted Haggerty, etc., but these people do not out themselves. Neither did the ones you posted your question about.

Another reason for the gays in these positions is that society teaches us (straight society that is) that we are not wholesome, "good" people. We are to be condemned to the worst punishments imaginable, in this life and the next. In some people, this can cause a form of psychosis where they seek out and try to end the lives of others; to keep them from "sinning," in an effort to save their souls. Thank you Religion for yet another effed up belief system.

Most gays these days don't care enough about what society 'thinks' for them to be emotionally damaged. However, there will always be some that slip through the cracks, who believe they are doing the will of society at large or worse, their Gods (whichever one is irrelevent). So, until we start believing in ourselves and not giving a rats-*ss what society thinks, there will always be those who sell out their fellow men, whether they be Gay, straight, whatever.

Ask Ted Haggard, Mark Foley, Ed Schrock, Jim West, or Ken Mehlman. They're also gay men who serve the interests of ruthlessly anti-gay organizations. Perhaps self-loathing has something to do with it?

There were many germans in the nazi party at that time, lots of them didn't believe in the party's principles, and weren't even socialists at heart. They joined because they wanted themselves and their families to avoid persecution and other forms of suffering, like maybe being put into camps. For many, refusing to join the nazi party made them conspicuous.

Some gays are self hating, and might have joined for that reason, but most of the gays who joined were just trying to avoid camps and so forth.

There are alot of gay liberals in the U.S. today who are socialists, inspite of official party affiliation. These folk do not support the United States Constitution or the Bill of Rights. While most of them probably wouldn't publicly support prison camps for those who are 'homophobes', I think they'd probably ignore it if it were happening. They're not quite nazis, but they bear a resemblance to those who *really did* believe in nazism.


My answer is: Most of the gay germans who joined the nazis were just trying to save their own hides.

edited to add: Great example of some gay liberals' tactics is the answer posted directly below mine by kkkpinkpussy1(that post has been deleted). Apparently, gay liberals on yahoo answers don't think that there are enough trolls in this section, so many of them disguise themselves as trolls and make posts like the one below mine (which was deleted). They apparently think it brings attention to the problem of prejudice against gays. If yahoo really wants to do something about 'anti-gay' trolls, they should investigate them to find out just how many of them are actually gays pretending to be trolls, and then post the results of their investigation right here on yahoo answers.

I do not support such action, however, because I believe in a right to privacy and freedom of speech. Go figure. *kisses*

These gays were just surviving. Not the self-affirming gays we are today. In a sense these people sold themselves out to go along with the crowd. If they didn't, they, too, would have been penalized, or killed.
