Check the legs near the tail. If youre talking about a snapping turtle, its hard to tell, because theyre supposed to be fat.

It is really easy to overfeed captive turtles.

You can tell when:
- Can no longer pull all limbs in fully.
- Box turtles cannot 'button up' and close shell fully.
- Skin 'bulges' around rear legs.

Correct by feeding correctly and offering more opportunities for exercise or food finding.

Reptiles are not getting fat or over devour, they devour basically while they are hungary & until they are finished , purely once you employ the blocks somewhat pay attention that they don't pollute the water & you clean one million/3 - 2/3rds of the water as mandatory or while grimy from ineffective food or food block waste, and so on they do get issues like shell rot, and so on if issues , their atmosphere isn't suitable like suitable cleaniness, temps, and so on !!! Take Care

If it is a box turtle and it is not able to get inside its shell completely, that might be a clue.
