something cool and electronic, if you can't think of anything you could get him a giftcard to bestbuy

Don't give a guy socks unless he is a husband, a son, or a grandson. Leather gloves are o.k., or a nice sweater would be good, as long as it doesn't look too conservative or gaudy. However, with clothes for men the best bet is to buy a size larger than what you think the person needs when buying shirts. Also, some good ideas might include car accessories, gadgets, books on CD, or tools (Craftsman tools are the best because they have a lifetime guarantee).

If you know what he likes get him something that he really likes for instance last year a got a good male friend of mine a x-mas coffee mug and his fave instant coffee; he loved it and really knew that I cared to get him something that he would never buy for himself that he really did need.

Assuming you know him well enough, get him a cookbook for his favorite cuisine or specialty. My friend is a vegetarian so I get him veggie cookbooks. He always wants practical things and not junk.
