I like books with great well developed characters I can relate to.

Currently I am reading Slaughter House Five:

It is a 1969 novel by best-selling author Kurt Vonnegut. One of his most popular works and widely regarded as a classic; it combines science fiction elements with an analysis of the human condition from an uncommon perspective, using time travel as a plot device and the bombing of Dresden in World War II, the aftermath of which Vonnegut witnessed, as a starting point.

When the book was released, the bombing of Dresden was not widely known and was rarely discussed by veterans and historians. The book led to an increased awareness of the bombings and a reevaluation of the justifications given for aerial bombing of cities by the Allies during the war.

Here are some others:

1. A Brief History of Everything by Ken Wilber
2. The Language of God by Francis S. Collins
3. The Shape Shifter by Tony Hillerman
4. Tony Hillerman's Navajoland: Hideouts, Haunts, and Havens in the Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee Mysteries by Laurance Linford and Tony Hillerman

For nonfiction you might try Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. It's the true story of Krakauer's climb of Mt. Everest during one of the deadliest climbing seasons ever. It was written in 1999 so it isn't so new that it is likely to be checked out of the library. Enjoy!

----The best American mystery stories.
(This volume brings together the genre's finest from the past year. With stories from mystery veterans and newly discovered talents, this thrilling collection is sure to appeal to crime fiction fans of all tastes. )

----Stone Butterfly
(Part-time tribal investigator (and full-time rancher) Charlie Moon has a problem. His aunt, a tribal elder whose reputation for premonitions may be slightly exaggerated (or, at best, unreliable), reports seeing visions of a young girl with bloody hands. But Charlie figures it may be nothing, especially since his aunt never saw the girl's face. But when a man is murdered, and a young girl is found standing over the body, her hands bloody, Charlie is forced to reconsider. The Moon series deftly blends traditional mystery elements with Native American mythology--a surefire read-alike for Hillerman fans. )

----Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut

----The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut

-----Welcome to the Monkey House by Kurt Vonnegut

-----Mother Night by Kurt Vonnegut
