emla never did much for me as an adult, my skin is too thick for it to be an effective numbing agent. That is why it is used primarily on children, their skin is not so thick.
A blood draw is not all that painful if done correctly.

EMLA (lidocaine and prilocaine) has been used in both children and adults for a variety of procedures, including phlebotomy/blood draws. However, it is known that there is some absorption of the drug into the blood stream, so it can have systemic effects. While it has FDA approval for use in children of 37 weeks gestation or older, it is essentially unknown what effects this can have on the developing fetus or the breastfeeding child. Side effects depend on the dose of the drugs, the area covered, the duration of drug exposure, and the patient's own physiology and so are not completely predictable. While adults tolerate the drug well, side effects have been repeatedly seen in children, particularly smaller children.

I've used it as an adult and I think it works very well. Just make sure you apply it about an hour before your blood test. I sometimes applied it twice to make sure it took.
