Go to art school, but only if you want to.Also put yourself out there and mingle in your local art scene.Make connections and apply for art grants.Self-promote and do so creatively. If you are thinking of relocating ti an artistic hub than do some research and find your best fit.I'm an artist in St.John's Newfoundland, a great place to live and work and be inspired.Good Luck to you in your creative pursuits.

Depends on what kind of artist you imagine you want to be. If you're thinking of contemporary art, you need to go to art school, show your work to galleries, become afilliated with one, have exhibitions, become collected and critiqued, etc. Good luck. About 1 out of 5000 artists who attempt that route actually end up making a living from it.
