Honestly, it's no worse than any other genre of music(in terms of lyrical content.) I would actually like some thought out answers, not: "lolz i hate rap bcuz i think it degrade women lolz!"

For every rap artist that you think degrades women I can name 5 classic rock artists that do the same.

When you don't understand something, it's easier to hate it than make an effort to understand it.

The most important thing to remember is, THE MOST PUBLICIZED RAP IS THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL AND/OR DEGRADING.

See, in the "urban" community, for a long time, heavy metal, for example, was summed up as the "We're Not Gonna Take It" video by Twisted Sister. This was a popular image and perhaps even an accurate one for that time period. But some people carry this image of a nutty rebelious teen and think every rocker thinks and behaves this way.

My point is, most people who say "Rap is crap" or call it "meaningless" have probably only seen or heard the over-exposed ignorant BS that record companies think will sell. Multimedia is responsible for giving us the wrong images - WE have to be responsible for finding the REAL STORY. There are positive rappers out there, AND great Metal Bands, too. Please, we should NEVER just discount something as trash. Millions of people love it, so it's good to more than just a few people.

I like rap, I have some on my iPod. But it is relatively tasteful. I can understand some of the really hardcore stuff being construed as offensive, but I just look at it for what it is. Most of the rap I have is from much earlier periods, like the bodypopping/breakdancing 80s (Gary Byrd's The Crown for instance). I knew a guy at school who had his own band and was constantly bitching about how r'n'b and manufactured pop is not real music. I like it though, emo/grunge stuff just depresses me because that's what everyone at college was listening to and I wanted to be different. However, it must have a tune too. I hate a record that's just rapping.

Not everyone does. My problem with current rap, is that it takes no talent to make. Its the same 3 songs over and over again. Real musicians make their music with instruments, or at least make their own music, not have someone else make it with a senthiziser.

Let me sum up most CURRENT rap

"nyah nyah, im richer than you!, im richer than you!, cuz im a rapper!, im a rapper! na na nana

On your offer- Dr.Dre, E-40, Eminem, C-Bo, Celly Cel, 50 cent, The Game, Too $hort, B-Legit, Rappin-4-tay, Master P, Silkk, Mysical, Nelly, Method Ma, Redman, Ghostface Killa, Cam'ron, Easy E. Thats 19 rappers who degrade women. So thats 95 classic rock artists for you to name. Go ahead and start. I hope you got some money in your mouth.

You cant just say all those groups degrade women. They have to have actually done so. Tell me how aerosmith degraded women? Janies got a gun?

now before i post wat im about to post, i am baptist, so yes im christian. music is art, and should not be produce in a market in which it cannot grow. with this being said gospel music to me should be sacred like all other religions. i don't hear jewish rap, islamic rap, or any religion marketing itself. Christianity is already a dominant culture as is, for there to be a market, only shows that people are trying to market off of peoples faith and love for god. christian rap is not an exception. christian rap being the worse of the genre, because in order to be an effective rapper, you have to follow a trend and genre. which christian rap often follows hardcore rap. which is retarded. chritian rappers often mimic current rap acts and gimmicks. for instance : Gospel Gangstas (i wonder who signed off on that) they were marketed during 1995 gangsta/G-funk era which coincidentally they suit. their first album was called gang related and the album was aimed at promoting a messege from god. christian rap is a perfect example of how gospel music is more into selling records then it is for teaching gods message. for the simple fact, why would u make a gimmick like that for a christian artist. also being better then gucci mane or solja boi don't make you great, it makes you ok. cause being compared to them is insulting enough. especially for a gospel rapper. overall christian rap/ gospel rap is not hated, it's over looked. cause so many real hip hop listeners can see that the genre is a gimmick in itself. and only a few artist will stand out. after all wouldn't the genre have a distinctive style and sound if it was a real rap genre. cause i was watching BET on the sunday early run, and saw a rap video with a dude rapping about god to a dark, low tempo, gothic sounding rip off of an ja rule beat. and thought. why would you display your love for our savior and father in such a way. i rather listen to johnny cash's gods gonna cut you down, cause it is a true it's nature.

For me, it has nothing to do with how it treats woman, or explicit lyrics.
I just don't think that rap "artists" aren't very talented, and all of the songs are the same to me. If I liked it, it wouldn't seem that way.
I like bands where people play instruments, write their own (meaningful) lyrics, and SING.
If someone who does rap has a good voice, they should sing a different kind of music because they can't show that talent. but then a bunch of people say it's "gay" when a guy sings.
Actually, the people that I know of that say things like that are either rap artists or people who listen to rap... and plus, when I listen to some rap songs, the people seem homophobic, and that makes me lose respect for them... but it's your choice if you listen to that music, and I respect it.

Because it's the current popular style of music. Rock had the same problem (and still occasionally does) back in the 70's. Music is a form of expression and no genre is free from criticism.

Quoting Sinbad, the comedian: "Sing to me brothers!" In other words, rap is poetry with no melody - talking, but not singing. Rap music tends to have the melody in the bass line (it took me a while to figure this out). Also, rap does things in "fours" - repeating the same exact musical phrase 4 times in a row, and this can get BORING. The best rap groups actually SING and combine the rapping with the singing. I don't hate rap, but I don't love it either.

I completely agree with you and I personally don't know why some people really hate rap. I don't love it, but there are some rap artists out there that have real talent and rap about real issues. The misconception is that rap is only about girls and guns...

I agree with flyingcloud in regards to folks blasting their "music" so everybody can hear it...keep it to yourself folks! I dislike rap because I don't concider it music. You have some fellow slobbering into a mic (most times can't make out what's being said). They all look like a bunch of grown apes with the way they sway their arms back and forth in front of them and their pants hanging down to their knees. Plus, HOW MANY TIMES DOES A PERSON HAVE TO TOUCH THEIR PRIVATES BEFOR THEIR TALLY WACKER FALLS OFF...sheeesh Also Rap exploits guns, drugs and gangs...? You can't really dance to the "music". I'm sure we all have issues with different kinds of music however, I must say besides slash metal, some punk rock, rap is very very low on my list for cataloging it under music.

I hate rap because it is just plain annoying. I would prefer to jab an icepick through my eardrums than have to listen to it. It is more like talking instead of singing. The artists have very little or NO talent. There is no way you can name very many classic rock songs that degrade women. I am 100% sure I am older than you and have heard alot more variety of music than you have. I refuse to let my kids listen to rap because most of it is vulgar and has topics that kids do not need to hear about.
