AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. It is usually targeted at students in the 2.5-3.0 g.p.a. range; that is, students who have the potential to go to college but need a push to get there. It's a combination of study skills training, college motivation, and tutoring by college students. Sometimes students have AVID as a stand alone class and sometimes it is linked with others (ie AVID English, AVID History, etc.)
