If there were not women in romantic novels, they would all be about a bunch of gay guys.

I haven't ever studied particularly the role of women in Romanticism, but here are my ideas based on my studies of Romanticism in general:
The era of Romanticism is defined, generally, by these characterisitics: love of nature, love of the common man, neo-classicism (i.e. Greco-Roman artistic ideas), the supernatural (i.e. Gothic novels), nationalism and heroism. Depending on the wirter and their aim, I would think that the role of women would reflect these things to different measure. Everything in Romantic writing is heavily idealized, even the common elements of humanity and nature, so women would also be idealized. Women and men both are shown willing to give up everything for love, but probably more particularly women. (i.e. The Lady of Shallot) Women were often shown as weak or emotional characters (as were men to a lesser degree) in need of saving, but unwilling to compromise their ideals and standards in that process. (i.e. Jane Eyre, The Mysteries of Udolpho) When they do, disaster is likely to follow. (i.e. Wuthering Heights) caveat: off the top of my head, I don't know that all the works I'm referring to are strictly Romantic, but they evidence the principles. This was also a time of strong women writers who created flawed yet strong women characters. Because we're talking about the ideal, although women may have been shown to have emotional weaknesses, they were idealized as having profound moral strength. That moral strength enabled them to encourage the hero towards his heroism and towards moral fortitude.

it seems to me that the women in these novels are all the same, just different names and hair colors. generally the woman is in some kind of financial or physical danger (almost all of these women have promised themselves to stay from men at all cost). then suddenly the the most handsome man comes along, this man is usually filthy rich or a cop, and he's extremely emotionally unavailable. but the woman somehow works her charm on him and in the process forgets her promise to herself, then he saves her so the role of these women is to apparently brainwash the women of the real world!!!!!!

the role of the woman is to be the object of desire for the man, the grand prize, the object of desire. the man also is in a similar role, and then theres tension in between which causes friction/chaos in the world the movie takes place in
