I am in the process of doing that myself. I have always enjoyed photography, but lately have gotten into it more and more. There are books out there which will help you start you hobby become a source of income. It is all going to depend on what your hobby is and how marketable it is as well as if you want this to be a main source of income or just "fun money".
I think the most important thing is to make sure that your hobby is something that you will want to continue to do many years down the line. Like any job, you don't want it to become stale.
It is also a good help to find other people who enjoy the same hobby and can give you some pointers. There are many groups out there (especially on Yahoo Groups). I have found that they are all more than willing to help.

My hobby is computers. First, I taught myself about computer using Barne's and Nobles Dummies books and free internet tutorials. (It took 1 1/2 years). Then, I got on job websites and searched for computer jobs. When I got hired, they taught me on-the-job using the AS400. Now, I use computers at work and also at home, after work. I'm happy and lovin' it!
