What do you mean by painful?

If you think your hobby is a good source for income, you will need to do several things:

1. Do a business plan (you get books on this at your local public library).
2. You may need to do some market research- these books can probably help you. Find out if there is a market for your talent.
3. Talk to the people at SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives) They are great. They can help you get started.
They have a website.
4. Look at the Small Business Administration website. That's another source.

The more you know about what lies ahead the less painful it should be!

Photography. It has always been a hobby, and I was quite good in it. But I didn't have the confidence to do something about it. Until people started to compliment me on my pictures, even stock libraries.

The only disadvantage that I had was my camera, which was not good enough. So last year or so, I decided to buy myself a professional camera (which cost me an arm, a leg and a whole lot more) and since than photography jobs have come in slowly. Now I am a professional photographer for a PR agency, still freelancing on the side, doing weddings and product shots!

Love. If you have love and passion( which apparently correlate) for your hobby, then you can take it to the stars and back. Most, apparently do not take their hobby this far, but regardless, it is always plausible. I have used my knowledge of many different subjects and become a consultant for businesses( mainly real estate) and helped people find lucrative ways to make money.
I have sometimes generated returns of 400%, but I am only a consultant.

As you become an expert you can recognize when something is low priced. You also know the items other collectors want to buy. You will know the difference between originals and fake. You will recognize the condition of an item from mint to poor. With this knowledge you can buy for your collection and for resale at a profit. I've done this with many things.

astrology and Palmistry were my hobbies in younger days. But i
did not have enough money to buy all the important books. later I started collecting books and also forecasting, reading hands etc. Now i am full fledged and been able to buy computer, astrology soft wares, printer etc. I have earned all this money through my hobby.

this is a wrong way to think...youre screwd if you think youll be making money all your life...hard work or time isnt proportional to income...no matter how ridiculous this sounds i suggest that you make enough money in a year to live comfortably the rest of your life...and then pursue your hobby without worrying about it being commercially viable.

hobbies are for healing, I found that out. painful as it was. I still have hobbies and they are still healing. off the clock. hobbies are no longer fun when your livelihood depends on them for income.unless you can sell a hobbie idea.
