When someone does drugs, they get addicted. For some people it becomes such a problem that they lose almost everything. Why don't these people just quit doing them? I mean, when that person is sober, don't they realize what's going on around them? Don't they realize they are ruining their lives and those that love them?

No they don't realize how bad things are going. And if they do, the only way they know to cope is to do more drugs.

Addiction is an actual physical change in the brain that changes the brains motivation and reward system. You brain becomes fixated on the drug and elevates your need for it above all others. Your brain will stop rewarding behavior other than doing the drug. The short of it is that nothing feels good anymore except doing drugs. This is a surprisingly strong motivator.

It is a chemical state of the brain in the same way as clinical depression. A person can't just wish themselves out of a depression.

Drug addicts become dependent on the drug. Many drugs (especially schedule 1 drugs such as heroin) will alter brain chemistry and produce a sense of euphoria. The problem starts when these effects wear off. At that point, a person will develop withdrawal symptoms: sweating, restlessness, irritability, loss of appetite, and so on. It's the crash after the high.

To make things worse, people develop a tolerance to the drug(s). In other words, they become desensitized to the euphoria they get from taking them. As a result, they have to take more and more of it over time just to get the same sensations that they had the first time they "experimented" with drugs.

of course they realise, but they don't see themselves as able to change; they don't see themselves as master of themselves... few people do, even those who never become addicted to anything. there are many more addictions than drugs. It is a human phenomenon that spans culture, place and time. Addiction is hardwired into some folk and whether they find drugs or fashion or food or money or work,,, or whatever, they will become addicted. You may as well ask a fish to swim in the desert as to ask why an addict is unable to control themselves. The fish would look at you like you're mad, and the addict will do the same. Even when they know they're addicted, they continue because they don't believe they have the power to change.

This is going to sound like a smart a** answer but by getting started on them. Some drugs just take over a persons life. They know they're addicted, ruining there lives, liable to lose everything, but still the drugs have become more important than anything else. Takes much effort, rehabilitation, and time to get over them and still, start again, addicted again. Best way not to get addicted is don't start. Yes it can happen to anyone, even you.

When I was in the hospital in labor I was given the most amazing drug, it made me feel awesome, with only a small side effect that I had to keep having my husband check and make sue I didnt have bugs on my leg. The side effect was a small price to pay for how awesome this drug made me feel, it was like everything went away, I could even tolerate my In-laws with a smile. I have maintained since that day that if cocaine or heroin or some street drug made people feel that way that I could completely understand how people get addicted to them.

Just my $.02. But I think if street drugs are like the way I described above, the people taking them are probably completely unaware most of the time that what they are doing isnt good for them or the people around them.

Alright... I see you have many responses to this.. Hope you can read mine.
I am an addict ! At times in my life I didn't care about anything. Sad to say but the only time I even comprehended other peoples emotion was when I was coming off the dope. for me drugs were an escape from depression and reality. At first they were to feel good, then they were to feel normal, then it got to the point where I couldn't live without them. I neglected everyone in my family and all my friends.
I am not sure where or when it actually became an addiction.

Even so-called experts in the field cannot agree on a definition for "addiction." What is your definition for "addiction"? BTW, many people use drugs for medical purposes. These prescription meds do not ruin lives, they SAVE lives and improve QUALITY of life.

Its a good question.... my own personal experience with this is that i did know how i was affecting everyone around me... and the fact that the drugs (my case Coke) made me feel good..until that 8ball a week habbit turnedinto a 8ball a day...and then twice a day...I think that i hated comming down so much i just always wanted to be high...then after about 22 years of steady use...i just stopped...strange...i just did not feel like i wanted it anymore... and i didnt want to lose my kids and wife to the stuff. I lost my brother in law to it, he mainlined in his neck and od'd even that didnt stop me...so i guess there is no real answer to this question...fact is i have no idea why i did it...

Addictive drugs modify your thinking. An addict thinks its going to be end of the world if he or she does not get the next fix. They are out of control. Addiction destroys your will power. For them only loved one is the fix.
