Hi, I have horrible cramps when I have my period. It feels like someone is stabbing me over and over. I used to only have them on the first day of my period, but I am having them throughout my whole period. I have tried birth control pills, ibuprofen, Midol, Tylenol, Aleve, and heat pads. They get so bad that I can feel them in my back. Do you have any suggestions of what to do? My mom says it's kinda weird that nothing works and that they're lasting so long. Thanks!

Ibuprofen is the most effective and least likely to give side effects.
Basically, there are 2 stages to cramps: 1) the blood vessels get engorged and ready to expunge the menstrual blood. This feels like a dull, but intense ache. Treat it with heat, to ACCELERATE the bleeding. Yes, it sounds nuts, but my girlfriend and people I know in the health field agree.
2) the Bleeding/cramping phase. After the blood starts flowing, if cramps persist, you don't want to be in pain OR lose too much blood. So USE ICE. Keep an ice pack over the area of your uterus for 20-30 minutes, lifting occasionally so skin won't get hurt. Do this for 2-3 days or until bleeding stops.
If you go more than 10 days w/excessive bleeding, see a doctor!

i used to have really bad period cramps aswell..i couldnt even get to work for a whole 6 days whilst i was on!! i tried most of those stuff aswell..and they didn't help. i had a bit more sugar..helps with the stressness if you do get stressy..i no i did!! try hour long baths, but without bubbles, try not to stress yourself out, it may be those tablets that are making the pains worse. if that doesnt work then go to the doctors and see if they have anything for you to take, this is all that the doctor said to me when i was like this..so try it!! good luck.

I have this too and many of my friends. We all have endometriosis. If the pill didnt help talk to your dr. He may give you vicodin which will help on those days when it is unbearable. I used to have to take off work it was so bad, but the painkillers make it so I can function (I only use them about once or twice a month) and you can't drive with them. See if your mom had a history of these kind of problems, but it really sounds like endo

You can have tight muscles in your back that are pressing on the nerves of the other organs as they leave the spine. That pressure can make the other organs act up and/or go into pain. If you have the pressure on the nerves that go to your ovaries it can be making them act up in pain. To get rid of the pain you have to release the muscles in your back and here's how to do that: Back: (do from a sitting position) Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side. For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

Stay away from caffeine and alcohol for a few days before until your period is over try getting zinc, calcium, and B vitamins obtained in food and supplements. Also exercise. Maybe something like swimming or even walking. Nothing that will strain you ab area. I know I get them really bad that I can hardly move sometimes. I cut out caffeine and exercises. I hardly result to meds cause they never seem to help.
Well good luck.

Well to be honest it is odd that none of the things you have tried have not elevated some of the cramping. Birth Control worked for me and Excedrin. Try maybe some stretching exercises (believe it or not it works for most). Talk with your OB/GYN and see what they suggest.

You may have fibroids. You may also be getting dehydrated with your periods, which is more common than people think. Drink lots more water before and during your periods. It will also help flush out the bloating. And take Excedrin for the cramps.

That sucks, especially that they're lasting longer then before.. Uhm, Tang Kuei is very good for helping with that...It can be ordered from a company called Herbalife (you might be able to find a distributor locally.) or I'm sure a health product store (like GNC) would have something similiar. With that, perhaps your painkillers will do more good. Good luck and feel better soon!

I know this sounds silly but try Traditional Medicinals Organic Raspberry Leaf. It helps both regulating womens cycle and helping with cramps... It really works... I have bad cramps too. Also hot showers sometimes help...

I have suffered from the same problem since i was really young. I am resorted to filling plastic bags with really hot water and placing it over my abdomen. It works really fast but you have to be really careful not to burn yourself too. The skin on your abdomen will get really red too. Do this only with extreme caution.
I suggest visiting your doctor and getting some heavy duty painkillers too.
