himself. Holden's life is dominated with teenage alienation and fear he is looking for a way out of this. It is a journey of self discovery, he is confused by the hypocrisy he meets "The phonies" and is searching for something real that he can relate to and believe in. He is painfully aware that the ugly nature of the world an of man is in him and he is the same. This increases his sense depression and desperation.

In case you missed it, Holden is narrating (unreliably) his story from a mental hospital (that'll really impress your teacher), hence the last line Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody."
