Yes (although it's called Jobseekers Allowance now). If it's part of a major lay-off your local Jobcentre Plus will hold an advice surgery at the workplace in question. If not you should take yourself off to your local Jobcentre Plus office as soon as possible to fill in the necessary claim forms.
If you are a member of a Trade Union/Professional Association their representtives should also offer you assistance, as should your local Citizens' Advice Bureau.

in most cases benefit is payable the issue of payment is means tested so if you have built up saving then you might have to spend this in the first place
