I am two months pregnant and one of my favourite food starts is prawn cocktail, is it safe for me to eat it

According to the conversation I had today with a friend who is pregnant, no. She knows someone who ate prawns when she was pregnant, and she got food poisoning. Her baby was then born deaf. Obviously there is no scientific way of proving that the prawns were to blame, but it does seem likely. If I was pregnant, I think I would avoid them just to be on the safe side.

Prawn Cocktail When Pregnant

If the prawn is cooked: yes.

You want to avoid uncooked fish and fish that contains high levels of mercury, most notably king mackerel, swordfish, shark, and tilefish. Also, albacore (white) tuna has been linked to high mercury levels; "light" tuna is a better bet. The EPA and FDA list shrimp as among the five most commonly eaten fish/shellfish that are low in mercury.

You do want to limit your intake during pregnancy, however. The guidelines (EPA, FDA, all written material on the subject I've ever seen) suggest limiting yourself to 12 oz. of cooked fish and shellfish a week, and to make sure you have a variety of fish and shellfish and don't just eat the same prawns/salmon/whatever over and over. The newer guidelines also contain recommendations specifically about tuna, as its mercury content has been subject to question in the last few years.

Enjoy your prawns.

Because prawns are notorious for going off very quickly I wouldnt chance it.

I would stick to something safe like soup as pate isnt safe either when your pregnant.

Better safe than sorry and its not for long, good luck with your pregnancy and congratulations x

You are definetly allergic to this brand. I would go to an oriental store and purchase that is what I do or supermarket. You must keep bag and or go to Dr. and ask for allergy test to find out which ingredient you are allergic to. I had to some years ago and I had 50 scrapings including 2 injections to find out what foods to remain away from and to this very day I can not eat them. I do Cheat who could live without Icecream hope this helps.

You are still in your first trimester. It is not safe to eat sea food. If the sea food you are eating has any bacteria or a high level of mercury then this can cause many birth defects or other problems.

Yep, that would be fine! Prawns are cooked, yes? Shrimp is fine, but like anything during pregnancy, practice moderation...
