Babies grow so fast!! You can buy so many things though...Maybe look on the internet or also seen in magazines...for one of those poems using the baby's name. Each letter of their name is the beginning of a hopeful or moving sentence. These are then put to cross stitch..or put in a beautiful frame. etc etc.
other ideas:
room decorations
night light
a soothing musical toy
mobile for the crib
babies need a lot of those small burp blankets ( I never had enough!!)
blanet for the crib
socks
one of those musical toys that projects stars, moons, etc on the ceiling in the dark (very soothing to my children)
baby swing
savings bond ( a great start to savings)
gift certificate( lets the mother go buy what she needs for the baby)
baby soaps, lotions, grooming supplies?
DIAPERS!!(buy in larger sizes because mom probably already has newborn size)
A nice book to read to baby
photo album for mom
A baby's first year book
and of course you can go buy some toys for baby for the months ahead..there are toys though that they say babies can enjoy or discover right from birth..they can feel(by taking textured toy and touching baby with it) and can see some colors mainly red and black.

savings bond
an engraved babies first christmas ornament
baby einstein movies
I belive the company is Lamaze - they make some good newborn toys. Yes, the baby won't have use for them right now, but I have a two month old niece who already responds to rattles and squishy noise making toys
maybe some summer clothes, she probably got a lot of clothes for this season but maybe not for spring/summer - they are aleady out, I got some outfits at babygap for the spring, plus you can still find at macys or other dept stores clearance clothes from last summer
Maybe you can get something for the nursary - a stuffed animal, cute baskets, wall hangings

Hallmark has nice ornaments for "Baby's First Christmas" that your step-daughter might like. It'd be a nice memory. Also, Things Remembered does a lot of engraving of their items, maybe something (if you know the baby's name, etc.) personalized?
Another idea I had was a gift certificate to Babies R Us. That might be something she could use. Not knowing what she got at her baby shower, there still might be some things she could use.
Have fun with it, newborns are always neat to shop for. :o) Maybe you might also be interested in visiting a Babies R Us and just browse and see what they've got and what peaks your interest.
Good luck!

Get clothes that are made for babies a bit bigger than newborn, because even though she has tons of clothes now the baby will outgrow them soon!
Newborns really don't care what they get for Christmas as long as they're loved and nurtured.
I remember when I had my baby a lot of people asked what else she needed (I already had tons of clothes). I felt embarassed to ask for anything, but it would have been great if everyone had given me a package of diapers. As banal a gift as they might be, diapers can be EXPENSIVE and buying a package or two per week can really add up.

First Christmases and First birthdays are all about the parents, becuase the kids are usually too little to really understand. So, I think keepsakes would make a wonderful gift. A gift certificate to a portrait studio and enclose a couple of well-selected frames (one for home and work), or use family pictures to make them a calender (can be done at Kinkos, Office Max and etc), or if mom and dad work you can give them keepsakes to take to the office (mini photo albums, magnetic picture frames, coffee mugs with family photos on them, a small kit to take a plaster footprint.
Good luck and Congratulations on the new baby.

First Christmas ornament for the tree. Hallmark makes cute ones with a place for Baby photo. Can put it on the tree every year.
Consider a scrap book that you make personalized. Mom can use this for years to come to place photos, hair swatches, first teeth, swatches of babies clothes and events.
Consider Baby Therapy Music CD's They have been proven to be soothing to babies when played a s they sleep.
Consider a quilt making kit. This way Mom can choose articles from Baby from each different size, that were special cloting articles and make a quilt to give the baby when she grows up and goes off to college. It will be sebtimental of her whole life. Each year of the life and each memeory will be with her. A scrap book with this to show the event and the clothing she wore would be priceless.
Consider a mobile for the crib.
Consider starting a bank account. I started one and each day of the childs life I added one dollar. By the time they are grown it will be a great gift. Do not tell the child until they recieve it at age 18. It will be special for this child to kinow that each day of his/her life you added yet a dollar to build a love gift.
Consider a charity to give a baby who has nothing a start in honor of this special baby.
Gift certificates for Mom to buy neccessities would be appreciated too.
How about a gift basket made up with lotions, soaps, diaper wipes, etc.
Consider a pacifier. They make new cute ones with a stuffed animal and blanket attched so the baby has something to cuddle up to.
Consider gift coupns that are homemade. Some can say. Free night out babysitter. Free box of diapers when in need. Etc you can make them with personal ideas...and Mom can redeem them when she needs to...by giving them to you throughout the year, in exchange for the items you right on them.

Buy things that your step daughter will need to care for her baby, such as formula, diapers, clothing, etc. I'm sure she would greatly appreciate any extra help with those type of things. Save the baby toys for next Christmas.

Don't get her toys just get her stuff animal or maybe a rattle or a teething ring you know something simple. Make sure you look at markings on a box so if it says for only 3 years up i defiently would not recomend it....also books are always great for the child so you can read to them. will not even be that interested in opening the gifts so don't even worry about it.

parents always appreciate diapers and baby wipes, but if you wanted to do something more personal for the baby why not make a nice blanket, or picture to hang on the wall of the nursery. Or personalize a teddy bear or stuffed animal. You can go to build a bear workshop and make a special stuffed animal for the baby. You can put your own voice in it so when the baby grows up it will have a special message for him/her especially from you.
