If your thermostat (8years old) is stuck in the open position, the water circulates freely through the radiator in the first 30 minutes of driving. This means that ONLY cooled water is flowing through your heater core!!!
You want the thermostat to be closed in a cold engine, so that HOTwater inside the engine and heater core STAYS hot for a while. When the thermostat is in contact with 180?? degree water, it opens, and then gets cooled by moving through the
radiator.
This is an 8 dollar item (thermostat) and one hour's work yourself in the driveway. TRY IT YOURSELF. Even if you "test" your old thermostat in a pot of boiling water with a thermometer.. don't put that old thing back in the car. It will go bad soon anyway.
Good luck. It's a good job for a beginning DIY mechanic.

It sounds like you might have a broken thermostat. One which is stuck wide open. The result is that the entire system is being prevented from warming up quickly.

You might get a hint that this is the problem by looking at your engine temperature gauge when the car is cold (say first thing in the morning). Does the gauge move up slowly such that it takes 20 to 30 minutes to reach normal temperature? Normally the gage should come up within 5 or 10 minutes after starting the car.

If it is the thermostat, you should have it replaced. It won't be very expensive and it will improve your car's performance - as well as warm your bun a little quicker.

Most likely it sounds like the Thermostat is either stuck open or part way open even when the car is cold. A thermostat is supposed to close when the car is cold and then open at a predesignated warm-up temperature so if it's open the cold engine will have coolant running through which will make it take forever to get warm.

What does the temp gauge read?
Perhaps the cooling system is low?
