There's a few rat rescue sites on the internet. They take rats and sometimes try to find new loving homes for them. Look them up on the internet and see if there is one in your area.

I wouldn't be able to leave either of them there, knowing that pet shop employees tend to be utter fools and would probably sell them separately or as snake food. Dumbo and Fancy rats are the same species, just with a few cosmetic differences. They can be housed together with no issue - they're just separated in the store because pet stores are notorious for jacking up the price on the more "exotic" looking animals (like the dumbo rats... or hairless or rex for that matter.) Tanks are not suitable, no, but neither are the "enclosures" that Petsmart or Petco use. Very little ventilation. Which is why many pet store animals have URIs. Something to consider when looking at pet store animals. It would be nice if the store got smart and just put them together and sold them together - discounted the price, maybe, to ensure they went as a pair. But they wont because they's too $$ crazy.

I just want to add that if you are in the UK, dont bother contacting the RSPCA, they wont take rats as they class them as vermin. Some Blue Cross shelters will take rats if they have room. I recommend that you look for rat rescues. A lot of online rehoming websites arent updated regularly. I would also try the various rat forums(like www.fancyrats.co.uk) Do not put an ad in the paper. You dont know who your rat will be going to, I'm sure you dont want them to end up being either fed to a snake or used constantly for breeding feeders.

To bad you were not around me, rats are great pets!!
Please be careful about giving your rat to a pet shop or giving it away at all! Just because it is a pet shop does not mean they will not sell it to a known snake person or feed it to there own snakes.
The snake people (I owned many snakes I like them) will buy your pet and feed it! It happened to me and I was so upset. There are pet critters then there are feeder critters. My pets do not go to feeding, unless someone lies to me which happened.
Just be careful....Take you rat to the local animal shelter. The city ones take in all sorts of critters. And they make sure the person is going to give it a good home.....
Good luck and advertise your pet, if they have no money to buy it then they have no money to take care of it.

Please, don't take him to a pet store or give it someone you don't know for free. I have a cute pet rat and I would never risk her being fed to another animal.
From experience, if you'll be giving him to someone you don't know, ask for payment. Really. A bit more than a rat that is fed to snakes cost.
Yes, it's hard. Many people don't like rats. I hope you will find a good home for your little darling.

See if the humane society or animal shelter will take him, or advertise him in the pets section of the newspaper.

Ring the RSPCA they will take it off your hands or find a good home for him. better that than some of the sick replies you've had already.

Take him to your local Chinese restaurant. They will pay top dollar for a big, juicy rat!

Find someone with a pet snake. I'm pretty sure they'll give it a "home."
