Because for one thing it has changed people's ability to do things at night or in the dark. When it became relatively inexpensive to stay up later (think farmers burning expensive candles for an hour or so before going to bed as opposed to a few pennies worth of light ) people stayed up later and went out in the evening more which used to be impossible.
Also the light was the cornerstone for such advances as the motion picture and the camera which have both changed the artistic world. The concept has just skyrocketed. The lightbulb quite literally took us our of the darkness both physically and scientifically.

Are you referring to the sun? Well if you are the Earth gains all of its energy from the sun. Every living thing on Earth derives its sustenance from the sun in one form or another.
If electric light it has a major impact on society because it requires a source of energy to produce which when acquired led to other revolutionary advancements. Also, it has allow mankind to be able to utilize all 24 hours of each day.
