The biggest, most powerful, and most dirtiest Nuke would wipe out New York city and the small towns around it entirely, and make the rest of New York State unlivable do to radiation polution.

I assume 10 nukes could end the united states.

Well that depends on a number of factors. First and foremost is obviously the size and composition of the bomb, a suitcase nuke could easily take out the core of a city whereas a multi megaton hydrogen bomb... well lets just say there'd be no city. You also need to take into account the height at which the bomb is detonated (air V ground) because it will have different effects. A ground blast will contain the shock wave slightly whereas an air burst will throw it out over a wide area. Finally, take into account where the bomb is detonated and how much radiation it contains. Since nuclear bombs generate large EMP shock waves, they'll fry and electrically powered device permanently which would be the most damaging in areas dependent on technology. The level of radiation emitted by the bomb also need to be taken into account. If you look at the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima the damage was the most severe within 1-2 kilometers but damage and injury also occurred as far as 8 kilometers away, though obviously not as severe.

It depends on many things--the size of the bomb, whether it was from the air or underground, where it was exploded.

Have you ever seen Hiroshima or Nagasaki? And those were really really small nuclear explosions.
