i was supposed to start AF on monday but instead of the normal AF it was just spotting. I started the actual red flow today. I normally have a 33 day cycle. when calculating ovulation should i put 33 day or 36 days? I normally have AF for abt 5 days. If i count monday as the first day, today would be the 4th day and i am usally much lighter on the 4th but today it feels like the first day...just confused abt whether i should consider it a 33 day or 36 day cycle...tahnks for all the replies....also feeling crampier than usuall

I consider the first day of my cycle the first day I have anything - spotting, light flow, heavy flow, brown, red - anything. The reason is that hormones are released that trigger the shedding of the endrometrium and on the first day you begin to release the old lining. Whether the blood is old or new or whatever, the shedding is the first sign that your body started the process. The first 24 hours of seeing that shedding, to whatever degree, is day 1. About 14 days later, your body releases lutenizing hormone to trigger the release of the egg from your ovary. A great resource for tracking my fertility has been Baby Center. Look in the conception section. Check it out...

I would say the first day would be when the actual flow started, brown spotting can be dryed up old blood.

I believe that the first day of your cycle begins on the first day that there is normal to heavy RED blood flow.

Someone told me about this website, and it tracks your cycle for you. It is very helpful to me, and also emails you info and facts about women's cycles.

The first day of bright red bleeding is considered the first day of your cycle

Spotting brown entails that you have bee bleeding a little EARLIER than you first noticed. Only OLD BLOOD is brown, at any amount.

Ditto Jody. It is the first day of the actual red blood/period itself! FUN FUN, isn't it??? LOL!
