can i be suspended from work because the firm is short of work i work for a large private firm

Companies usually suspend people because the said employee broke a company policy or stole something from the company. If there is a lack of work, they'll simply lay you off.

They can lay you off but not suspend you

yes they can but you can also go to the unemployment file for it and the company will pay some of the monies due to you,then i bet they will give you your hours back,i guess,just make sure and call your unemployment office good luck
