He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925 for Saint Joan, and accepted the honour but refused the money. His motivation: "Nobel Prize money is a lifebelt thrown to a swimmer who has already reached the shore in safety". He remained true to his asceticism.

He didn't really. He's still the winner of the prize, but refused the money.

"I can forgive Alfred Nobel for inventing dynamite, but only a fiend in human form could have invented the Nobel Prize."

Because he felt like he didn't do anything to deserve it while everyone else did.
