Why did George Bernard Shaw refuse his nobel prize for literature in 1925?

He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1925 for Saint Joan, and accepted the honour but refused the money. His motivation: "Nobel Prize money is a lifebelt thrown to a swimmer who has already reached the shore in safety". He remained true to his asceticism.
