I am kind of a stickler for ettiquette and I'm sorry to say that if someone is asking you what you would like as a gift, not work related, it is extremely tacky to straight out say "money". You will come off looking like a complete chump, not to mention greedy and presumptuous.

Do you know how much this person wants to spend by any chance? If its $10 come up with a gift idea for him, if its $25 then you can suggest that you like a certain store and leave it at that. He will take that and either buy you something himself from the store or go with a gift card.

I feel your pain, I too most of the time just want to say "just give me money and when I see something I like I'll have to money to get it", unfortunately there is no polite way to do this.

Good luck

Tell him just a gift card from which ever store you go to. You get money toward what ever you want and put the ball back in the bosses court as to how much.

I would tell my boss I was saving for something, and that you have asked everyone else for money. If He doesnt want to give you cash, give him a gift idea as well

Just tell your boss...that you are going through a hard financial situation and you really dont want material things you just want to pay those bills hehe.

But if your boss insists on asking specifically what you want tell him/her straight out!

Tell him/her that you are saving up for _______ and say that you have one picked out and you would appreciate money for _____. This way he/she feels like they are helping you get something you really want, even if it more than they were going to spend, they still helped out some in helping you get it.

Suggest gift cards instead of money. It seems more personal anyway.

Tell him you are too picky and that a gift card to _________ would be great.
As for getting actual cash, maybe you can trade it with someone for 90 cents to the dollar or something.. I wouldn't say that you just want cash please..
