Well, we distinguish between elements by counting their electrons, which happen to match number of protons. So, oxygen always has 8 electrons and 8 protons (because the negative and positive charges have to come out equal.)

However, sometimes an atom does NOT have the same number of electrons. It loses an electron, gaining a positive charge, or gains an electron, gaining a negative charge. These are called "ions," which are not to be confused with isotopes.

An isotope is a different weight from "normal" atoms. For example, C-14 weighs 2 AU's more than C-12.

You can figure it out from that.
