My grandfather Who just passed away was a veteran of WWII and faught in the 847th MVD. He earned several battle stars and medals, but didn't like to talk about it much. My father and I were wondering how we could learn more specifics about his unit. Is there somewhere online to find out this info? If not, where can we learn more?

You can find out a family member's service back ground through the U.S. National Archives. Here's the link. http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html

Contact the military. For the most part, they are very supportive of bringing closure to the families of veterans. And the best way to find something out is always to go straight to the source!

It would be helpful if you could tell what MVD stands for and whether he served in european or pacific theater of operations.
