First off, don't judge people by the way they may look; for instance, if you have a hip hop club, don't assume that just the people who "dress" the part are the only ones that should be allowed in; You can have some multi-millionaire standing outside in line in a $3000.00 suit that you're neglecting because some knucklehead bouncer can't tell the difference between class and crass; have all contact people wear headsets (coat check, a few pre-selected cocktail servers, certain managers) so you can have them ready and waiting to take coats, serve a complimentary cocktail (have several choices on a tray: a good beer, martini, mixed drink) as soon as they walk in the door-you're communicating with your staff via headset, so the bouncer or management should set everything in motion: "Karla(coat person), Puffy's coming with six people, Sue(cocktails), tell Mike (bartender) to grab a bottle of Cristal with 7 glasses, Egon(VIP section), sit Puffy's crew at section 1A behind the glass...that type of thing! Treat all people like VIP's to a certain extent and you won't have to worry about offending some "unknowns" that you may be able to Network with in the future...also, get to know your people; make them feel a part of the big picture and you'll get back tons in high morale and low turnover! Quality before quantity!
