Take your own ride unless you think that they wont make it. That is no miles on either. Both those cars should easy make it to 200,000 miles, so why are you worried about it? Youll be more comfy in your own familiar car too. Have fun and be safe!

This is a highly personal choice, so all I can offer is my own opinion.
If I make a trip that is less than four hours I drive my own cars a 2006 Mercedes SLK and a 2004 Ford Explore Sport Trac. the Mercedes has limited luggage capacity and a firm ride. The Sport Trac is too utilitarian and like gas too much. I usually rent a mini van for overnighters. I have found that life on the road is great with the Chrysler/Dodge Caravans. Great comfortable seats, lots of leg room, lots of cargo area, good gas mileage, etc. I have driven them in snow and ice and desert heat and found them to be the ideal travel vehicle. However I would not want to use one for driving around town, etc. So by renting I have the best of both worlds

Why buy a car if you're not going to drive it. If I were in your shoes, I would take the Alero (I have a 2000 Alero) only because the Saturn is still covered by factory warranty and you don't want to go over the mileage in that car (at least I assume that it's still covered). The Alero only has a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. Unless this car is unreliable, I would take my own car.

Sounds and looks like the Saturn still needs to be broken in, and driving freeway miles after the first 500 is a good idea. Why spend the money for another car when you could save the money and take everyone out to dinner with the money saved, or an extra Christmas gift...say for yourself. Happy Holidays.

I read somewhere that the average price of operating a vehicle (including depreciation, repairs, gas, etc.) is 35 cents per mile.
So it would cost you about $210 to take your own car. If it's cheaper than that for the rental (including gas), get a rental.
Also, be aware that alot of car rental companies don't allow you to take the car out of the state that you are in. They also might charge you extra for "excessive mileage" that you may put on the car.

It will end up costing you more to rent the car, 600 miles is nothing. Unless your mate is looking for an excuse to ride in a different new car, I would suggest skipping it.

unless you have a car that you think can't make it, just take your own car. from the two cars mentioned, it sounds like they should both make it just fine. it's not worth the money to rent one, plus you'll be used to your own car.
