Hello everybody!

I was looking into adopting a Chinchilla from a rescue. I've never had one before although I have had other exotics.

I was wondering if they smell, or smell bad. I know they take dust baths, but if he smells can I actually bathe it??

Thanks for the info!!

Chinchillas are actually not smelly at all. Out of the many small animals you have to choose from, these little guys smell the best.

They take dust baths, and it is important to NEVER give them a bath in water. Their coat retains the water and it can lead to them getting very ill.

I personally think they are smelly, but not anymore than other small rodents (except mice and rats-very stinky IMO)
They need a dust bath at least once a week, and you never want to actually bathe them. A completely drenched Chinchilla can mean death (hypo or hyper thermia, depending on the water and ambient temp) They are pretty clean and the dust bath actually eliminates most of the bad odor I smell. (I have a sensitive nose).

we currently have 3 chinchillas, they dont smell at all as long as they get a regular dust bath and we clean out the cages regurly.

they are great little pets! :)

Every Chinchilla I've met was lacking or light in oder.

I only have my experiences this is comeing from though. Those things seem to love me,.. but I always want to give them water and I got in trouble with someone once that would try to keep their's outside 24/7 in a cage because I was little and thought it was cold and in need of water. They didn't like me being it's friend... and they didn't like it indoors >.>

He takes his own bath in a special dust that I used to just set on the floor. I actually had one that used the litter box while he was out of his cage.

I thought it was a great pet. You will have to be sure to keep wires picked up and know where he is but you can let them out to bounce around.

I don't know about the bathing thing, but I do know that when my bf's mother had hers it did smell. But worse than that it would run all night, and made the worst racket. She finally had to give it away, because it was just too annoying. But they are cute and cuddly

Chinchilla's do not smell, their cage can if you don't' clean it regularly. Chinchilla's should not get wet as it can cause a fungus growth in their fur. Please do a lot of research on a chinchilla before you get one.

You can NEVER wash a chinchilla. EVER EVER!! Its awful for them. They kinda stink but just about like a hampster or the other rodents.

no please don`t bath it,they don`t have an odor, but they don`t make a very good companion pet, more of a living conversation piece. They are cute though and very, very soft. They are relitively clean too,the biggest mess they make is when they take their dust bath.
