I believe Santa is based on old northern European religion.

When the church began to convert the northern European pagans. They found that these people would not give up their Yuletide festivals and celebrations. So in order for the Pagans to convert they had them celebrate Jesus birth during this time of ancient celebration.

No where in the Bible is Jesus said to be born in late December, or does it talk of Evergreen trees, Reindeer, and Santa Claus, or mistletoe. ........"kiss kiss kiss" "smooch smooch smooch"

I believe in the spirit of the holiday, and I like the idea of Santa Claus aka "Sinterklaus"

That he is VERY loosely based on a real person, but was mostly made up and used to sell more toys to families as the West became more prosperous last Century. I would classify him as mostly harmless, and even a little fun, though he might encourage too much greed among kids on Christmas.
