How the doctors tell if you broke a rib:

Poke the patient in the ribs

If there is a dull pain all over a broad area of the chest wall, then it is bruised. Even if it is excruciating pain all over the chest wall it is likely to be just a bruise.

However, if there is one spot along the rib that hurts MUCH MUCH more than the rest, then that is a rib fracture.

If she is having severe pain (and quite possibly breathing difficulties) she should go to the hospital.

X-rays may not find rib fractures always. However, there are other things the doctors should look for such as pneumothorax. They also can give good pain relief for strong pain.

You need an x-ray to know for sure. No one can definitively diagnose a broken bone from reading a description on the internet, and you should not expect it. Go to urgent care and have one done.

That doesn't sound pleasant!

Does she have a spike in the pain when she breathes? It might only be a very deep bruise. But if it's worrying you, you could go to the emergency room for an x-ray.

Good luck!

Nothing will be done if she has a fractured rib. She will just have to hurt for several weeks.

Even if she did, the doctors don't do anything about it. They tell you NOT to wrap it, and just to take it easy for awhile. Believe me, it's not worth going unless it's so bad she can't move. Then go. But still, i don't think they will do much.

If she has a hard time breathing then she could have a broken rib.
