2 boom boxes with built in condensers, actually. that, or he just sang and played the song at the same time, rather than tracking them "studio" - meaning, one track at a time. (guitar, then vox, then other guitar) with the two boomboxes, you can record the guitar track, play it back with the other tape recorder recording and sing over it. be careful, though. this sh*t gets noisy quickly. (and probably with the money spent on the two boxes, you could've bought a digital four track by zoom or one of those other co's)

oh.. and for that other guy, a shure sm57 is a dynamic mic; not a condenser.

EDIT - lol. i got a thumbs-down, but this IS how kurt did it - direct or two boxes back and forth.

happy recording, man1

Simple. FInd a boom box with a MIC input jack. Get a condenser mic (like a Shure SM57) and then go to radio shack and get the right adaptors to plug it in. It is really pretty simple. I think he played all that stuff himself at one time, ala Springsteen Nebraska. Just hit record and play guitar and sing at the same time.

The hardest part is going to be choosing where to set the mic so you get a good recording level for both the guitar and voice.

Now the hard part... Write, Play and Sing like Kurt Cobain.

you'd need some kind of cassette recorder with input jacks for a microphone. since you'd probably be hard pressed to find an old cassette recorder, you could probably do the same thing with your computer and the simple sound recorder software that comes with it. all you would need is a microphone to do it. of course, this isn't going to give you a high quality recording (as neither did Cobain's boombox) but it would help in getting your ideas down. you could also probably do this with a microcassette recorder as well as an iPod with a microphone attachment.

Many boom boxes have mic imputs for recording to audio tape. Some even have built-in mics.
