i want to make a journal for my brother for christmas. i am going to use speciality paper... with a pretty thick cover. i am an artist, so who knows what will happen once i get started, but i dont know much about book binding.. i dont want to sprial bind it, and sattle stitch might not work either, i kinda wanted something really pretty.. and different.

any ideas, or how or where to go?

Well, I have some friends who are talented "scrappers" as they call themselves. They often punch holes in the edges of the books they are making and then tie them together with something interesting and relevant. Ribbons and lace are very attractive but I've seen several interesting and manly ones done with rafia ribbon, burlap scraps, and hemp cord. Leather cording would also be an attractive binding for a guy's journal. Once they've punched holes that are symmetrical through the cover and the pages they either tie them off in pairs or thread it through in a manner sort of resembling how you would lace shoes.

You should use Japanese stab binding, it is beautiful. I can't really explain how to do it without showing you, so here is a web site that's are very informative. After you get the basic technique down, you can make more elaborate designs.
