I'd say the most important thing is his lack of direction and/or ambition in his life. It all traces back to the moment when he discovered that his father, Willy, was being unfaithful to his mother while Willy was on the road. From that moment forward, when Biff realizes that his father was NOT the man he took him for, he can't "find" himself, and is fueled largely by bitterness and resentment.
