The basin you refer to is for the "Red River of the North". The river itself flows northward through Minnesota and into Manitoba (Canada). The basin covers a portion of both Minnesota and North Dakota.

However - there are several other "Red River basins" in the US, let alone two in Canada.

As far as i know the Red River flows through Texas and Oklahoma..am sure it is not in the Louisiana Purchase which was purchased in 1803.. however it might be..Look it up.
