Here's my essay:
The Importance of Reading

The invention of the Personal Computer and the spreading of the „video-culture” was seen by many people as the end of the Guttenberg Galaxy. They were sorry to realise that the new generation trained on this new „video-culture” was not as eager to sit down with a good book and immerse in the story as sit down in front of the TV or the computer and immerse in a virtual reality. As for me, I am more optimistic. There always will be readers to keep up the Gutenberg Galaxy. However, as a future teacher I am aware of the fact that we have to teach our children to read again, to grasp the miracle of a good book and open up the fascinating world of books before them. We are responsible for educating a new generation of readers. Why is reading so important?
First of all, books are one of the most important media of transmitting our cultural heritage and other forms of personal and social traditions and values. They pass on the knowledge of previous generations and are a constant source of joy. Furthermore, written media is a vast source of information about the world around us. Just think of all the different kinds of newspapers and magazines, journals, broadsheets and tabloids, periodicals and the rest. Our days start with reading them while having breakfast and often ends with them, too. We read to pass the time while waiting at the dentist’s, the doctor’s and so on. Then there are the posters advertising all kinds of different products for possible consumers or events such as festivals, concerts, exhibitions, and so on and the manuals for different products. Illiterate people are disadvanteged in our culture. Although there are more and more machines to make our lives easier we still need the ability to read if we want to know how to use them.
We also need our reading skill in the learning process. It is no wonder that reading is among the very first things we are taught at a very young age, sometimes even before starting school. Reading has an important role in developing our writing and communicative skills, too, in acquiring the ability of abstract thinking and improving our imagination.
So thank Goodness, those who thought that the conquest of the Personal Computer meant the end of the Guttenberg Galaxy eventually proved wrong. And I, myself strongly believe that nothing - no matter how fast technology develops – can replace books.

Books will always be useful.

They are a product to hold and cherish. You can read them at your leisure and they travel well. They can come with you on busses, subways, airplanes. No one will tell you to put it away because it is interferring with the electronic air waves...

Electronic books are fine -- but honestly, wouldn't your rather curl up with a good book on a stormy night under your covers and let your imagination run wild with that special story...

If radio and movies did not replace books, I don't think the computer age will either. It is a shame that so many have stopped reading and our children don't seem to grasp simple reading concepts anymore.

If anything there should be a move to get more people reading - all the time. After all, Reading is FUN-damental.

P.S. Books still useful - is not correct. Are books still useful? Reading would help you learn your verb and noun placements... Maybe the question should not be about books being useful - but reading...

Oh, without any doubt, books are still very useful.

The Encyclopedia Britannica on CD is very boring compared to seeing 24 red leather bound volumes on your bookshelf, and much more fun to find the answer or information you are looking for.

With a book, you can quickly skip back a page to refresh your memory of an event or character.

Your imagination is free to roam when reading a book, when all you have to do is turn a page, instead of fiddly mouse clicking.

When the phone rings, it is easier to put a book down than to escape the programme and then have to reload it.

Books are great!.

I like books, you may have noticed...

wow. i agree with almost every answer given so far.
plus my thoughts
1- helps you to build your vocab by learning not only the meaning of a new word by seeing how it is used in context but ,also seeing how it is spelled as well

2- you can keep them a very long time before they are damaged and if they are damaged amazon should have a used copy for $5 including S&H

3- without books it would take a long time to learn how to operate any piece of technology or equipment

i love books. my favorite part of writing a paper was doing the research, looking thru magazines, books, encylopedias, etc. such fun. the actual writing, not so much.

They don't hurt your eyes as much as e-books.
They still contain useful information about stuff.
You can't prop a wonky chair up with a computer (well, you could with a very thin laptop, I suppose, but it would probably be cheaper to buy a new chair).

You can smell them - who doesn't like the smell of a new book.
One of life's pleasures is to lend a friend a book you've enjoyed.
