Most likely it means they will be checking references. It also means that at least they did not exclude you immediately after the interview. After reference-checking, they might ask you in for another interview, or they might offer you the job. The fact they didn't say "you got the job" leads me to believe that HR is going to do some more research before making you (or anybody else) an offer.

I interview a lot of applicants where I work. It is very uncomfortable to tell the person that they are not going to be hired. I typically say something along the lines of what you just heard, so that they can go through the embarrassment of being turned down in their own home when they receive the turn down letter.
I don't know where you applied, so I can't be sure how they hire, or the process involved, but if you heard that line from me, it would mean that I wasn't going to be offering you a job.

I must admit, as an employer and interviewer, I'm not that nice. I'll say something that's fairly obvious to anyone except an idiot. Usually "Thank you for coming in." Tone is very key here and body language too.
Do a lot of employers/interviewers do this? I wouldn't know. Haven't interviewed for a job in decades. I can see how that might be frustrating.

That means that they will now consider your interview/resume and possibly call you in for a second or third or fourth interview. You will know when you get the job. They will typically discuss salary/compensation with you and say: "When can you start?"

Not nesassarily. Obviously they have a few more people that want to do an interview. Usually it goes from a local level to a corporate level. Hang in there. You obviously have someones attention. Good Luck to You!
