This is how a person would disable an LPT port in Windows XP.

1. Double click on the My Computer Icon on the desktop.
2. Once My Computer opens up the user needs to look at the column on the left hand side of the screen where all of the options are.
3. Look for the option that reads View System Information.
4. Click on that line.
5. Once that is done a new window will pop up and there will be a number of tabs above it. Click on the one that reads Hardware.
6. Then a new window will replace the old one and the first section in this new window will give you the option to open up your device manager and there will be a button that reads device manager. Click on it.
7. After you've clicked on the Device Manger button, you will see the all-too-familiar list of file folders with plus signs next to each one. Each one of these plus signs is to the left of a piece of hardware that is running your system. (As you look straight at the screen)
8. There will be a folder that reads Ports-LPT & COM right on it.
9. click on the plus sign next to it.
10. a branch will appear that lists the different types of ports that are available on your computer.
11. Right click this line and it will turn blue and a window will appear.
12. One of the words in this window will be Disable because the hardware is already Enabled.
13. Click on the world Disable and that will disable that port or those ports.

Unless you really know what your doing in the device manager there isn't really a reason why you should be there. Just keep in mind that once you've disabled those ports, that you may not be able to successfully connect a printer, scanner or anything else that is considered a peripheral device.

The LPT and COM ports are not the actual jack that one would plug in a USB or IEEE or 1394 into. Those ports are the peripheral ports that the computer recognizes for hardware connections.

You can either disable it in Windows by going into the Device Manager (Control Panel > System icon > Hardware tab > Device Manager), finding the LPT port, right clicking on it and choosing "disable".

Or you can go into the computer's BIOS setup during the boot up and disable it from there.
