yes heat rises and it creates loft. an upward flow of air. the smoke of the incense gets pulled to the upward lift of the warm air. This is how glider airplanes can stay in the air so long. They find an area where the air is warmer (like in the lake, there are warm and cold spots) and the glider will circle in this corridor and gain altitude

smoke rises... not necessarily towards light... but warm air rises.. period. If you burned the incense on the top of a book shelf in a dark room.. the smoke would still rise.

It only looks that way - where the light or heat is, the smoke is more visible than in darker areas of the room.

Because a flame creates an air current that draws cooler air from below (or from the sides) towards it, and sends air warmed by it shooting out above.
