This world would be a terrible place without it. With education comes civilisation - just look back through history at the uneducated. As for the 50 year olds of today - yes they do help to make this country better but sadly the present generation of school leavers are all too often leaving without being educated and once again look what happens - ASBO's on the increase, no sense of respect or morals and these kids behave like those of years ago - hanging round the streets, stealing, robbing etc. xx

Education is the basis of our entire civilization. Without knowledge of the past, we as humans would be forced to constantly relearn scientific discoveries and warfare tactics. Having insight of past events allow us to learn and change. It helps determine where our society is now, how we got there and where we can go in the future.
It is also the root of our economy. Without it, well, we would probobly still be living in caves wearing deer skin loincloths. Without any sort of education we would not have been able to open up all of these job opportunies.. All of our new technological advances, etc..
But my question is, how do we REALLY know what we know? Think about it. Everything around us is man made so to speak. We created language and the meaning of words, religion, science.. Everthing! For all we know we could have it all wrong. Just a weird thought I guess.
It's doing an OK job though, because our world sure is functioning. It is never going to be perfect so we just need to focus on what is good.

UK only.
Factory Acts were created to stop child labour.
The Forster Eduation Act (1870) aimed to remove children from their dangerous jobs working in factories. Since UK became truly industrialised at around that time. There was no need for such action prior to this point as agricultural work did not entail such danger. In 1880 education was made compulsory until the age of ten years. This age was raised twice more - to 12 years in the 1900's then to 14 years of age in the 1940's.

As a teacher I have had to ask and answer this question many times. In the end I think I would say that a real education (and that is not necessarily what goes on in schools thanks to the national curriculum) should aim to broaden a person's mind and therefore their horizons, help them to think for themselves and be able to reflect upon their own thinking. Every time we learn something new our brain structure changes, new connections are made, new neural pathways appear and our brain becomes more complex. When students asked me why they had to learn French I used to tell them that it would make their brain more beautiful. It's true!

Listen mate, you get the government you choose. So if you don't like it, change it. Don't blame the education the over 50s received. Maybe we simply learned how to pull the wool over other people's eyes and then deprived them of enough education to let them work it out for themselves.

The purpose of education is to enlighten one with information and the knowledge thus gained should be reflected upon and put into action. Isn't that why an educated individual is considered 'civilised' or 'cultured'?

educations is a means of sharing/gaining knowledge. Without in mankind would not have evolved as it has to date, i.e. without it you wouldnt have this computer to use and ask questions.
Are we learning as we go along, well in some ways yes we have some fantastic technological equipment in use today, but we still kill each other, rob each other so in some ways were not.....but i doubt in some ways we never will!

To ease our way in a difficult world. Without education--of any level--we'd be clueless, and life would be tough.
The more education we've got, the better our chances of living a rewarding and meaningful life.

The primary purpose is to share/gain knowledge.
Knowing is better than not knowing. And even if you don't end up knowing, attempting to know is better than not attempting to know.
And why should we seek knowledge? Because it is there, or there is at least a possibility that it is there.
