Very unpopular question...but i'll awnser it, and i hope its the last time too, this question has been ask waay too many times
because the history of the sport.
it use to be like rugby we use to use our feet only to progress the ball forward, but as time went on we introduced an idea called the forward pass. and also back then field goals were worth alot of points (at one point it was more points) than a touchdown. but TDs became more points, thus it was more desireable to try to get a TD instead of a Field Goal.

American, football, Aussie rules and rugby, all resemble the form of football that was played pre-19th century, rather than our football that was a muddle between rugby and football before the inception of the Cambridge rules

You know, I have no idea. I'm an American, and I don't understand anything about American football, much less the name.

That's a great question. Americans are full of themselves. Burkahs comment on the World Series rings true too. Soccer is the true football ; )
and American English is really just American.
Scottie Boy...This is a UK site. Not an American one -_- You are not helping our cause any dude.

Why are non-North Americans so obsessed with what we call our sports? For a country that many of you supposedly hate, you sure spend a lot of time worrying about unimportant issues involving them.
