Baseball statistics are amazing. It's part of what makes baseball so special. You can go through a guy's stats and draw up a pretty good picture of the type of ball player he is or will become.

Up until the age of 35, Bonds was statistically consistent, like most players in the history of the game. It was also at this age (in 1999) that something changed. He went from a 35 homer a year guy to a 50/60 homer a year guy beginning in the year 2000 - at the age of 36.

At the age of 36, nobody in the history of the game (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) has ever had over a 50% performance increase in their power stats that lasted 5 years - ever!

You don't put together, *arguably*, the best 5 consecutive years of productive hitting in the history of the game from the ages of 36 thru 40 - when everyone else is winding down. It just doesn't happen.

This is an anamoly of gigantic proportions.

Bonds was a favorite player of mine up until 2001 (the 73-homer season) when it became obvious that something was really different about him.

I can still root for him, if he's clean... I just can never take his lifetime statistics seriously. It isn't fair to Aaron and it isn't fair to anyone else who plays the game cleanly.

I doubt that Bonds haters have low IQs. People are entitled to their own opinion. As for myself, I dislike Bonds. Not because he may have cheated, though I think he did, but because of the way he portrays himself. He just doesn't seem like a very friendly guy. I'm sure he's different in person, but in the media, he just isn't very nice. As far as being one of the greatest of his generation, or all time, he certainly is. There will always be some doubt, because of the era. He probably took steroids. He as much as admitted it, if the leaked grand jury testimony is true. Does that make his homeruns less valuable? Who knows. Home runs take more than just power to hit. I find 755 to be fishy, particularly since he never really hit homers at this rate in the "prime" of his career, but even at the lower pace, he'd be well over 500 homers, have a good batting average, and tons of stolen bases. That puts him at one of the best ever regardless. People who dislike Bonds are racist? I think that may be an overgeneralization. Bonds has never tested positive for a banned substance. Neither has Mark McGuire. If Bonds haters are all racist, I would dearly like to see every single Bonds supporter who tries to float that statement past me ("He never tested positive") to sign a petition that McGuire belongs in the Hall. If Bonds didn't cheat, neither did McGuire. Only difference is, McGuire is white, so I can't be racist for hating him.

Well i disagree with you, Bonds is NOT the greatest players of all-time, nor is Aaron. Best played of all time is the face of baseball The Babe. He his 714 home runs and ball parks were way deeper then they are now, some had shorter porches but getting up to 500 feet in center can take away about 10 home runs from each player every year. 500 ft in center would have made Gary Matthew Jrs catch look routine. Any way back to the Babe and Bonds. I can give you one reason that the Babe is better and that is he has never been speculated of cheating. I mean how can you not believe Bond's took roids, through an offseason you aren't going to gain 30-40 pounds of muscle with protein. And the use of steroids boosted him from a hall of famer to "the greatest of all-time" there will always be an asterisk next to his name from 2001 until the end of his career.

i will never like barry bonds. and it has nothing to do with his ability as a ball player. At the San Francisco card show way back in the 1990s when he first came over to the giants, I tried to get his auto graph as like a 14 year old in high school. I paid the dang 40 fee for his signature, got to the front of the line only to have him stand up and walk away because he felt like he was done. I have never been so completely insulted in all my life. What a rude sorry excuse for a person.

I could honestly care less if he breaks the record or not. He lies to the IRS. he lies about whatever substances he takes, he sits in his lame black recliner with his back to the locker room. He is not a team player. Baseball is all about the team and the parts of the puzzle that are put together to get 9 men on the field to win a game. It is not a team of 1. It takes more than home runs and breaking records to win the elusive world series title. Something that Bonds have never done.

His fielding is horrible, has not won a gold glove since 1997.

I also personally do not care if he breaks the record or not. I only care if my team wins the world series. GO A's!!!!!!!!!!

AMEN; the real sad part is these people don't decry McGwires stats although he too has been accused by Canesco who frankly admits they did steroids together. Nobody thinks he should be blocked from the Hall of Fame or have an asterisk next to his name. Pete Rose has a lifetime ban and finally admitted he bet on baseball after lying about it for years - yet these people campaign for him to be in the Hall of Fame. Can you guys say HYPOCRITES?

There are plenty of Baseball players out there that I admire. As far as I know none of them used steroids. What a arrogant jerk. He might have been the greatest play ever if he had done it legally.

In my own words. Hank Aaron will be on this Sunday. From the preview he talks about how it doesn't matter who breaks it he wont show up.
It wasn't fun for him going through it . He was just trying to have a great career and that's what Bonds is doing. Hank Aaron dealt with the hating and so is Bonds.
They just need to deal with it.

YES!!!! He is one of the greatest players of all time!
Andrew B doesn't know what he is talking about the fences weren't deeper, that were shorter back then! Down the right field line most of the fences were under 300 feet. Ruth should have had a lot more home runs. If Bonds was hitting back then he would have had over 1200 home runs!!!!!!

He cheated and therefore can't be the greatest of all time at anything except cheating. He was an above average hitter with great speed before he got tired of watching McGuire and Sosa get all the fame from doing steroids and hitting home runs. Its not like baseball has ever been a pure as driven snow game, but if you seriously think Bonds is the "greatest of all time" and hasn't cheated you may need to get a cat scan.
