Depends on what you want to do and how you play.

You want to solo quest/grind and level PvE, go hunter or warlock. You get a built in 2-person party, and can lay down some strong damage.

Want to be the DPS powerhouse in groups, go mage or rogue - be squishy. Learn to control your DPS though, or find yourself stealing aggro and ending up dead.

Like hanging out in a support role, play a priest or paladin, although shadow specced priests can be deadly in PvP (just don't expect a lot of raid invites if you're not healing specced).

Want to get "in their face" and lay down some damage - go warrior. But learn to play sword and board for tanking in instances and group questing.

Want to do a bit of everything - Shaman or Druid.

I think that most people who have played a mage will tell you that it offers the most "fun factor"... but there is no best WoW class because every class is needed in end-game...

If it were possible to put a poll out to all WoW players that have played a mage... a high majority of them will agree that above any other class... Mages have more fun.

Mage is hard to beat... perhaps because of the "awesome" powertrip you can get doing that much damage as a squishy.

Jason T has some good advice in his answer...

Mages are damage dealers even though they're squishy. My mage can take on things 4 levels higher and come out alive. I killed Tethis on my own at lvl 41 and he's a 43 elite.

Every class is good if it's played properly.

I don't believe in a "best class" but my favorite has been mage so far. Spec'ed Frost.

a mage is good at high levels, and an undead or gnome warlocks make great characters.
