No. Homer is a caricature of an American man. The character is intended to be a mix of some of the lesser personality traits we have. But overall, we view Homer as a pretty good guy when all is said and done. Not to be taken seriously at all, pure entertainment at this point.

originally the Simpsons was based on a real town in Oregon called Springfield. Springfield is a medium sized working class town on the other side of an interstate highway from a larger more liberal college town I wouldn't say Homer is typical yankee or american but more of a composite of typical american attitudes

Yes I believe he is the model of the typical america. I do believe that he his made to look worse then the average man, but this is how men act. Men have there moments but the writers of the simpsons have just put all moments every man has and put them into one.
