I live in Savannah Georgia, and just bought a new house. Everynight like for a few hours i hear something that sounds like bombs or dynamite going off in the far far distance. my neighbor hears it too.. any ideas as to what this is?? Fort Stewart Military base isn't to far away, and i don't imagine there being any kind of quarry blasting because there isn;t any real minerals here. its usually just a light rumble.

I lived in an area where I heard rumblings and small explosions. I have since moved, and there are no longer any of these sounds. The area of town where I lived before was in the midst of some factories and an electrical sub plant. Also, there were railroad tracks running alongside an embankment just over a ridge. There were some factories under construction. Sometimes they set off blasting caps (often at night so as not to arouse interest or concern believing everyone is asleep and won't notice, also so that their workers won't be around and possibly fall prey to injuries). These blasting caps gouge out severl square feet of earth so that they dont' have to dig, saving time. Also, the electrical sub plant near my home was sometimes running machinery and equipment that was REALLY loud and was running turbines and such so as to generate power especially at peak periods.

Take note the time and day of week. If it is close to the weekend and especially during holiday season, I would suspect such from electrical plants and other factories. I would drive around and see if there aren't any factories or big buildings or complexes being built in the area.

Charleston, SC. Friendly people, great fishing, excellent surfing nearby at Folly Beach, fun place to party and still safe to walk around at night, easy to find jobs, simply more opportunity. I have several friends that live there, and am considering moving. Be sure and go out to Folly Beach when you visit the area, and take the kids for a walk on the pier. Savannah is a great place to visit on vacation, but I think it just doesn't have what Charleston has to offer as a place to live. Good Luck

It could even be something like supply trucks at night. Sound travels when the weather is clear and cold. I can hear a train sometimes at night and I am a couple of miles from the tracks.

You say that the base isn't far? I'd bet money that the rumbles and such are coming from the military base. They work on odd schedules.... LOL
