even if the artist is the worst singer on earth but writes their own music i would respect them more than a artist that sings well but doesn't write there own music. wat would be the point of being a singer if u don't write your own music! For example some ppl hate Avril Lavigne but i respect her beacuse she writes her own music. what do you guys think?

no, not in the least bit - being a writer - and believe me i write all my own **** - its like an insult - shouldnt you write it if your going to record/perform.take credit? come on - music is supposed to be original and personal - not stolen and unoriginal - i mean seriously i know everyone needs a little help but if u cant even write a song alone, what are u doing in the music business - and besides why would I want someone else telling me what to say - that means that whoever is singing/rapping whatever is just a front with writers behind them - theyre actually talentless - they just act a part - they dont even write theyre own **** - its pathetic

I've seen this question before.

I might respect a singer more if they did write their own songs (that is to say, if they are well written songs).

However, I don't respect a singer LESS if they DON'T write their own songs. I don't choose a singer because they write good songs...I choose a singer because they SING well. Also, being a songwriter is very much like being a poet...Some people are good at it, and some are just not! I'd much rather hear well written songs, sung well, regardless of who writes them.

Do you respect your doctor less because they don't create the medicines they give you? Of course not, because it's not their job to create medicines. They only need to know how to make you better by using these medicines.

Should I respect you less because you don't do your co-worker's job, in addition to your own? Of course not! You're only expected to be good at YOUR job, not anyone else's.

The point of being a singer is that you can use the gift that you were given to express the message - even if someone else wrote the song. I see this very much like being a preacher...he didn't write what's in the bible, but he's great at sharing the message (and you don't respect him less for not writing the bible, now, do you?).

Besides...if singers ONLY sang what they wrote for themseles, then there would be a whole bunch of totally qualified songwriters out of jobs!

Personally, I respect Avril Lavigne not for her singing OR her songwriting, but for being herself, which is a difficult thing to do in her industry, and in this day & age.

Being a musician, as a career, you must learn songs that will be playable for many jobs. There are not many paying jobs that are for original music only. Many artists write their own songs AND sing 'covers' ! How someone interprets a 'cover' tune show great imagination and skill. If a singer writes their own songs, it doesn't mean they are better than other musicians, just means they have that gift of writing. That is to be respected, for sure! However, there are many other aspects in the playing of music that should gain your respect.

Yeah, it does bring up a valid point. There are alot of 'ghost writers' surfacing now days, those are people who write other artist's lyrics. I kinda felt cheated to learn that half the lyrics people use arent even their own. I think thats what gives establishes you have a gift, the ability to right. And to think all these gangsta rappers rappin about stuff and they aint even wrote it, which 9 times outta 10 means they haven't even lived it or experienced it.
Thats sad!

I totally agree. That's why I've always loved Chris Cornell (singer from Audioslave, Soundgarden) because he is a brilliant songwriter. So was Kurt Cobain. And Bob Dylan.

Using the classic Motown legends of the 60s as an example, PLENTY of them never wrote a single line or note...but are still well respected.

And look at Elvis.

EDIT:

But the *music* was still light years ahead of today's crap.

i respect all artists, be they singers, songwriters, singer/songwriters, painters, poets, etc.

we are all given a gift, and some people are lucky enough to have more than one, but i respect anyone who uses their gift whether they wrote the song they are singing or not.

I respect artists that have TALENT whether they write their own songs or not....a talented artist has the gift of taking a song someone else wrote and making it their own....that gets my respect...

well said. but there are a few singers who have wonderful voices, but they're just not creative enough to develop their own material. plus there's a lot of songwriters who don't want to be in the limelight, they just want to have their music appreciated. but generally i always have more respect for those who write and perform their own music.

there are singers and there are composers so they are different.
you can have a nice voice but not much inspiration and that's ok, or all the way around.
what i don't respect is people like Paris Hilton, no voice, no inspiration and call herself an artist. what the hell?
